Is regret necessary?

By J. Faith Malicdem // July 23, 2019

Absolutely. Regretting allows for us to consider our previous actions and circumstances that have led us to where we are now. A simple "I should've done..." or "if only I had known..." is healthy. It catalyzes growth and reflection. It creates new schemes in our brains of how to go about difficult situations from then on. However, the extent of one's regret dictates its power over their growth.

Know your limits. Know that what's in the past is in the past, and that there isn't anything you can do to go back and change that. Don't let yourself spiral or dwell, wondering if you could've led a better life if you had done a single thing differently. Because all in all, I think regret is a vital characteristic in human nature. Without it, we would not be open to growing, or to learning. Here's to being openminded and accepting of our mistakes + shortcomings! 🥂
